North Miami dentist explains the process of dental crowns

Chipped, broken, or misshapen teeth can leave you self-conscious about your smile and keep you from many social or professional situations. For patients dealing with these issues, dental crowns are an effective and affordable restoration that can enhance the appearance of your smile while also restoring strength and functionality to your teeth. If you are currently dealing with tooth decay or damaged teeth, Dr. Fain and the team at Fain Dental Arts can walk you through the dental crown process.

Initial Appointment

During your first appointment, Dr. Fain will examine your teeth and determine the cause of any issues you are experiencing. Many small cavities can be restored through a simple filling. In other cases, the cavity may appear small on the surface, but has actually extended deep into the tooth, requiring a crown.

Once Dr. Fain and team determine that a dental crown is the appropriate treatment, the preparation process can begin.

To prepare for a crown, impressions will be taken of the teeth and sent to a lab for custom fabrication. You will be fitted with a temporary crown to maintain functionality and protect the damaged tooth.

Permanent placement

Once the permanent crown has been finished, we will schedule you for final placement. Dr. Fain will remove the temporary and clean the tooth. During this time, he will check the permanent crown for fit, alignment, and color. If everything looks and feels right, the final crown will be permanently placed with dental cement.

Long-term care

Dental crowns require no specialized care other than proper daily hygiene. Patients are encouraged to avoid grinding and clenching the teeth to avoid cracking or chipping the crown.

Advantages of dental crowns

Porcelain crowns are biocompatible and mimic the appearance of natural tooth enamel. Porcelain is a durable material that creates a natural looking restoration. Patients who have a dental implant, require a bridge, or are unable to have porcelain veneers may all benefit from dental crowns.
