Miami, FL dentist offers dental implants as a solution for missing teeth
Losing a tooth is a rite of passage for a child, but has serious consequences for an adult. Trauma, genetics, and poor hygiene are all factors that can cause the loss of a permanent tooth. Having the tooth replaced is important, and one of the most effective ways to replace a lost tooth is with a dental implant.
Dental implants are false teeth “roots” made to support replacement teeth. They improve the speech, facial appearance, comfort, eating ability, and overall oral health of the patient. The implants literally become a part of the patient, and therefore look and function like a natural tooth.
The journey towards dental implant treatment begins with a consultation with a dentist. The needs of the patient are assessed and the best type of treatment is discussed and implemented. The surgery involves a small titanium post placed and anchored in the jawbone. As the jaw heals, the bone literally grows around the post to secure it into place. This process is called ‘osseointegration’ and can take anywhere from six to twelve weeks.
Once the osseointegration has taken place, an abutment is attached to the implant. The dentist will make impressions to measure the size, shape, and the bite of the patient. A crown or false tooth is fashioned based on those measurements, color matched to the patient’s other teeth, and then attached to the abutment.
This procedure is preferred by dentists because when a tooth is missing the bone of the jaw is not receiving any stimulation from chewing. Without the forces, the jawbone can lose substance. The forces transferred to the jaw from the new root help prevent bone loss. In addition, the other teeth do not shift out of place, so the patient has a natural bite.
